Saturday August 5th 1916

 Cloudy most of the day, but hot. Children and I pulled weeds. Mora and I hoed it is very hard work. Mora picked over 1 qt of huckleberries after 6 tonight. Memphis also picked about 1 pint. Mostly long johns. Bell stopped out in front and talked with the children awhile. Sidney came at about 10 p.m., stayed with Mary Allen last night.

Sunday July 9th 1916

Hot sultry day. Mary Dupra was buried. Rosco Bisbo went and got her in his car a.m. Mora, Maud and Memphis went to the funeral. Sidney picked red raspberries, so I made 3 pies and 3 little ones for their dinner pails.

Monday March 13, 1916

Mary and Mildred Potter went forward. Quite a nice day. Mora went to school as did several other children. Waited until 10 and no teacher came, so she came back home wet to her knees. Roads filled last night. Sidney and Alf. waded over to Munger's, cut wood. Sidney went to meeting. Awful tired tonight.

Monday February 15, 1915

Rained all last night, quite pleasant today altho very mussy underfoot. Sidney went to Weatherup's and got some onions, to mill and got feed, to store and also to Stricklands for 1/2 bu. potatoes. Mora and Maud came home to dinner got their feet wet so did not go to school p.m. James and Susie came over, staid to dinner, said little Mary had a baby boy. Charlie the horse had broken his neck, committed suicide. We are feeling a little better, but quite weak yet. James gave me some meal and Mora got some buttermilk off Mrs. Mallory and we had a lovely johnnie cake for supper.

Thursday May 14, 1914

Nice all day. Sidney walked out as far as Brewerton and took the first train to Syracuse, arrived too late to see Mary as she was buried the day before at 2 o'clock p.m. A Mrs. Watson had Mary's raincoat and she gave it to Sidney to bring home. He ate dinner with Sadie Hill and came on the trolley to Brewerton and walked out home, rode a ways with John Fidler. Took 3 dozen eggs got 20c each per doz. I rec'd a letter from Sadie Hill from Syracuse. The children went to school.

Monday May 11, 1914

Nice but quite cool and cloudy p.m. Sidney started out about 7 a.m. Mora, Maud and Memphis went to school p.m., a.m. Mora did not go, went to the mill for corn, went down to Weatherups tonight with Avis and got some buttermilk. Got a telegram p.m. from Syracuse that Mary* is dead, got a letter also (that she was dieing) with a special delivery stamp. Nellie came and brought it down. Guy came twice to tell me about the message so I could write to Sidney, sent a letter to him on the 2 p.m. Mr. Henderson came a few minutes before six this evening, Henry gave Cassie more potatoes.


*Note- I believe Mary might be Sidney's older half sister Mary Welsh. I have not been able to confirm this yet.

Saturday May 2, 1914

Nice day but quite a high wind, I found our grey rabbit dead this morning when I let the hens out. I think she had consumption, coughed all the while we had her. Mora has been twice to get green, once with Sidney, once with Lydia Boots. Maud went up and brought her children down here so she could go, Mora went up to Gehr's and back and then Sidney and her went over to Courbots Pond fishing, did not get a nibble, came home and Mora caught a chub and gave it to the cat, it was to cold to fish with any luck altho Mallory's land is posted. I saw John Fidlers reflection in the water over on the point of land when so dark I could hardly see him, Sidney called on P. Maruney a.m. he was just getting over the grippe. Little Mary Piddie 23 years old today.

Monday March 23, 1914

Cloudy and sunshine by turns, snowed a little, rather warm thawy. Commenced to freeze a little about 4 p.m. Sidney went to the mill for corn and to Lewis's and got groceries, carried wash water from the pond. We ate dinner about 11 and at 12pm he started for Volney. Mora and Maud went to school. Mora went home with Avis after school, when she go home eat supper and went up with Maud to Mary's and drew home 1/2 bu. potatoes on their little boys sled. Memphis went up to the stores twice today.
